Adapting to new markets
Print versionAt the beginning of the 90's, after Lithuania had regained its independence, "Baltija" entered the free shipbuilding market. Like many state-owned yards, "Baltija" was not ready for this. Nevertheless, the yard managed to get contracts both with local and West European shipping companies and yards.
During 1990-1997 “Baltija” has delivered 11 fish processing freezing vessels in various modifications. Company also built 2 multi-purpose dry cargo vessels which became biggest vessels “Baltija” have ever built. In this period there were built 6 hulls of similar type vessels for the Lithuanian Shipping Company and 2 floating docks for Singapore and Iceland.
However, the production and sales analysis showed that, without any serious technical modernization, the shipyard would face some difficulty in keeping up with competing yards in Baltic area.
