From the early days
Print version“Baltija” Shipbuilding Yard was founded by the Ministry of Shipbuilding of the former Soviet Union in 1952 and it successfully continues a 400-year-old tradition of shipbuilding in Klaipėda.
The Yard was originally established for the building of medium size trawlers fishing vessels for the Soviet fleets in the Baltic and Arctic seas. Klaipėda is one of the biggest ice-free ports on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. From the foundation of the company until the 90's the following were delivered: 69 river / sea going barges; 122 trawlers for fishing fleets in the Baltic States and Russia; 57 large size freezing stern trawlers for fishing fleets in the Baltic States and Russia; 66 medium size stern trawlers of the “Barencevo More” type for the Arctic fleets; 55 fish-processing / freezing vessels of the “Moriana” type for the Caspian Sea and Far East fleets of Russia; 4 river-going ferries for local river fleet.
Since 1958 the “Baltija” Shipbuilding Yard has also built 65 steel floating docks which were the main export products of the Yard. They are successfully operating in Bulgaria, Cuba, Germany, Finland, Iceland, Indonesia, Mozambique, Singapore, Romania, Poland, Yugoslavia and the CIS countries.
